There is something so familiar and observant about magpies. For this piece, I wanted to capture that quiet, inquisitive stance—perched attentively among stylised banksia branches with its head tilted slightly upward.
I worked with a more restrained, earthy palette of muted creams, soft charcoals, pale golds, and smoky greys. The bold black and white plumage of the magpie anchors the composition, while the rhythmic patterns and fine line work in the banksia cones and leaves give the surrounding bushland a layered, graphic feel. It’s a grounded, calm piece that brings a subtle sense of the Australian bush into an interior space.
